Tens of thousands of kingfish have overwhelmed the Port Stephens area after escaping from a nearby fish farm. This January 20 video shows what the uploader described as “kingfish mayhem” near Broughton Island, north of Sydney.
The 17,000 yellowtail kingfish escaped a sea cage last week and have a predatory nature which is harmful to wild marine life, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Marine Parks Association Chairman Frank Future said the fish were “ravenous,” and that “once they realise they won’t get any food in the form of pellets they’ll be eating anything they can find.”
The fish belonged to a joint New South Wales-Tasmania sustainable food project, Huon Aquaculture, which was criticised for its detrimental effect on the ecosystem.
