Surveillance video shows actions of armed deputy on duty during school shooting

Seamus Light
The Sheriff's Office in Broward County, Florida, released surveillance footage showing the actions of deputy Scot Peterson outside the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as a gunman went on the rampage inside last month, killing 17 people. The deputy's failure to enter the school during the shooting has added to criticism of law enforcement officials over warnings that accused shooter Nikolas Cruz posed a threat. In a press release accompanying the video, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said "the video speaks for itself." Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has said that Peterson should have entered the school and killed the shooter. Peterson, who had been assigned to Stoneman Douglas High School as an armed school resource officer since 2009, resigned rather than face suspension after an internal investigation was launched.
