Fire at Tibet's Most Sacred Temple in Lhasa, Damage Feared

Janita Kan
Fire at Tibet's Most Sacred Temple Extinguished, But Damage Feared Firefighters in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, put out a blaze on Saturday, January 17, at the city’s landmark Jokhang Temple, an ancient site sacred to Buddhists. Chinese state media said nobody was injured. The fire started at 6:40pm Lhasa time, Sina said, and was “quickly extinguished,” with “no damage to heritage.” Earlier reports in other independent media were more alarming, saying the fire had potentially put the temple, considered the holiest of places by Tibetan buddhists, at significant risk. This video was posted to the Twitter account of Michael Ye, who describes himself as a resident of Shanghai. The oldest part of the temple was built more than 1,300 years ago and the whole structure was added to Unesco’s World Heritage list in 2000 as part of the Potala Palace, according to the South China Morning Post.
